Make Your Own Portable Solar Power
Recreational Vehicles (RVs) are designed to give you the freedom of the open road. In theory you can go anywhere the mood takes you, but often you are restricted to available camp sites because you need a source of electricity. Many RVs have generators on-board, but these tend to be noisy and also to eat up the gas.
On many other occasions you also need portable electric power, such as for outdoors parties, camping and grid outages.
A portable generator is the usual solution, but there is a great alternative – portable solar power. It is easy to achieve, cheap to make and really effective.
These days portable solar generators are often used to provide all or most of your electrical requirements without hammering your battery, and a diy solar generator is very easy to make at home, even for the total novice. It can double as your rv solar battery charger as well.

Portable generators can be fitted with a foldable solar panel for easy storage, and they are usually quite light and easy to move. A single 8 square foot portable solar panel will produce about 75 to 100 watts, which is about equal to a pair of golf cart batteries. A typical 24 ft RV would probably manage on this but it would depend, of course, on your personal electrical requirements. Most RVs use less than 400 watts.
There are some additional things you will need if you will be driving regularly in hot climates and are using your portable generator as a solar battery charger.
For instance, even if you only use your on-board appliances a little, your batteries will need recharging from time to time – usually more often than is convenient! And beware, regularly draining a battery will shorten its life dramatically.
You will need to fit a solar power battery charger with battery temperature compensation to prevent overcharging of, and damage to, your batteries. Also, solar panels can get very warm, which can lower their efficiency and can lead to voltage drops. Ensure that your portable solar panel has a rating of at least 17 volts to to stop this becoming a problem.
These are just some things to keep in mind.
There is a good range of RV solar panel kits on the market but these tend to be very pricey, as we have mentioned already. Instead why not save a bundle of cash by making a portable solar power generator for yourself? You will find it very easy, a lot of fun, and literally anybody can do it. It will come in handy, not just in your RV, but for all those other events we mentioned – outdoors activities in general, power outages, solar battery chargers, that sort of thing.
What you will need, however, is some expert advice before you start to make your own portable solar power, otherwise you will probably waste a lot of time and effort doing research and not necessarily doing the job properly.
This is not a problem, because we can recommend a good source of expertise with first class step-by-step instructions for only a few dollars. We believe this is a really good investment in a portable solar energy system. Also, the product comes with a full, no hassle, refund guarantee in case you are not satisfied for any reason, so there is no risk involved.
RV solar power is affordable and easy to make, either as a portable solar battery charger or a solar portable power generator. The open road will be yours again to enjoy!
